12v vehicle electrics are easy once you know the basics.

lets start with the battery. the battery has positive '+' and negative '-' terminals. the negative terminal is not to be confused with a ground/earth. a ground/earth is what your mains electrics have to stop people killing themselves. a ground/earth is exactly that its a copper rod stuck in mother 'earth' that the ground/earth wire connects to in your household plug.

to test 12v vehicle electrics you test the main loom first then move onto the component.

example: testing a rear number plate light. place probes from a multimeter set to 20vdc on each of the terminals at the connector before the number plate light. if your multimeter shows around 11-13v with the ignition on then you have power on the main loom. re connect the connector then test the numberplate light at the lamp connector this should also show 11-13v, if not then the number plate light has a fault.

its that simple.

indicators will bounce from 0 to 11-13v on the meter.

the meter can show either + or - depending on which way round the probes are on the circuit.

you NEED the wiring schematic for your bike to test electrics unless you have in-depth knowledge of what bikes have what wiring codes.

Thanks, I don't have one yet. I will be getting a Haynes very soon. The previous owner has basically spliced as much as possible to the battery. I'll be so happy when I can get it all cleaned up.

be careful what they have connected to the battery. its often that people rewire the rec/reg onto the battery for better charging. headlight relays, horn relays and charging sockets are also common. work out what they have connected first then determine the usage, if it needs direct power then it stays on the battery or the extra battery lead terminal supplied with the gizmo, if it need turned on or off with the ignition then connect to the gizmo output.
