Noob question, what kind of oil?
Yep i already know how stupid this one sounds, my bike has done almost 5000 miles since october and is starting to squeak, I remember reading in the manual about lubrication points, what kind of oil do i need to do the job best?
I was thinking WD40 is a degreaser and will wash away too quickly but wasn't sure what else would have a decent method of application and hang around longer. Thanks |

Re: Noob question, what kind of oil?
Fantastic, thanks for that, I tried searching but mostly the terms are either too common or are too vague so I couldn't find the right answer.
Much appreciated, will see if i can find some at lunch now |

Re: Noob question, what kind of oil?
High melting point grease on linkages and stuff, rubber grease on brake seals and stuff, copper slip for back of brake pads and bolts, moly grease mixed with oil for inside engines...
There's more greases and lubes than you can shake a stick at. If you've done 5k miles without doing anything then it's likely to need a good going over, brakes servicing and stuff.

Re: Noob question, what kind of oil?
Damn good question, I'm not entirely sure is the answer (which isn't very helpful i know) I need to have a look at the weekend and find out which bits are squeaking.
but I figure i should be lubing SOMETHING (get your minds out of the gutter! ) also, my brakes are squeaking, clearly not a good idea to oil those! , what causes that and what can i do about it? |

Re: Noob question, what kind of oil?
If its a squeal when you apply them then they just need all the crud cleaning off them and a bit of coppaslip on the backs of the pads to damp out the resonance that gives the squeal.
Getting the pistons out, cleaned and lubed is probably a good idea too.

Re: Noob question, what kind of oil?
Hmm, that all sounds quite a bit above my skill level, is it easier than it sounds? (I've got the haynes manual which I shall consult later) or am I best asking the garage to do the brakes at it's service in two weeks?
Thanks for all the replies. |

Re: Noob question, what kind of oil?
Unless you're the sort to tinker with a lot of stuff then probably better to get someone to show you how to strip and rebuild the brakes and such.
Figure out whats squeaking first then we'll see how hard a job it is to sort.
