lake district

Hi guys I'm thinking of having a few days away on the bike in a couple of months. Plan at the moment is the lake district. I'm a complete newbie so can you guys advise of any routes for a gentle bimble around give me chance to find my feet?

Whereabouts are you thinking of staying mate? I could sort a few routes for you depending on where you'd be starting from and how many miles you want to cover in a day?

Also look here few in there to get you started

Just type in the passes - Kirkstone, Hardknott, Wrynose and Honnister. If you do those in any way you will love the views and the terrain you come across.

Ambleside backpackers makes a good cost effective base to work from, being fairly centre it gives good access to most of the passes.

yeah Ambleside gives you easy access to kirkstone one way (actually leads out of Ambleside) and wrynose the other way (leading onto Harnott), you're also on the doorstep of both windermere and coniston to.

+1 to staying in ambleside, although i'm a windermere man myself we had a caravan up there when I was kid, love the place

Couple of routes that won't kill your ar**
Point C on there is Hartside cafe, good place to stop and catch your breath after the climb up. Point E is Devils Bridge, again gets a lot of bikes there when the weathers good

Hardknott (point D) and Wrynose are a bit the 1st time up but take it easy and you'll love it

If you're feeling adventerous and want to do more miles, try the road from Ingleton to Hawes and then Hawes to Thwaite, known as Buttertubs pass. You'll have a ball

I stopped at the Camping & Caravanning Club site just outside Windermere. It was quiet, had its own little pub & restaurant & was fairly reasonable.
I took a bimble around a few of the Meres & rode up the Kirkstone pass. Was a nice little ride. Also, if you look for signs near Windermere for "Gummers How" it takes you up into the hills & you get a great view over Windermere.

The other one is the Isle of Man depending on your budget! Don't forget the small island i live on. And you can get there fairly simpley with a boat from Liverpool or Heysham.
