We've got self seeded poppies around our garden. Huge plants. They flowered yesterday.. very suddenly!

don't get too excited but they may be opium poppies (papaver somniferum). They have a long, dull green leaf. If it is that genus they are legal to grow but illegal to process (duh).

Mine just appeared in the front garden and I thought (initially) they were a weird cabbage until they kept on growing upwards. I am unsure why I suspected a cabbage since I hadn't planted any vegetables but growing things is like witchcraft anyway (to me). I suppose this implies that as a witch or wizard I'd be most like Rincewind (for Discworld fans).

they don't look like opium poppy leaves, they look too "green", too shiny and too fat.

you have another mutant. albeit a pretty one.

Once they've flowered the remaining pod will have thousands of seeds which, in theory, you can sow next year. (I'm still waiting). I may have Paraquat fingers.

Many years ago I heard some gardening lore but I've been unable to recall the exact expression and cannot find a reference to it... but it basically said if you let a poppy plant go to seed it it will take 7 years of digging to rid yourself of it.

edit: finally found the saying only it's for weeds/prolific plants generally not just poppies. "One years seeding makes seven years' weeding."
