Default car insurance, what a nightmare!

I cant work this out, maybe somebody can help me to understand.

I have a heavily modified arosa with over 20 grands worth of bodywork done all declared on my policy so it's totally legit and the premium is £345 a year fully comp, with no excess.

I was given a Peugeot 106 yesterday 98 plate, in immaculate condition with only 39k on the clock, 1.4 auto. It has been in storage from a deceased family.

I have therefore decided to insure the pug to use as a daily runner as my arosa is too impractical to use.

I have gone online and cannot get any quotes at all coming in under £800 a year with hefty excesses. Im 28 years old, got 7 years no claims, no claims or convictions ever and a completely clean license.

I have tried all the big comparison sites and i'm not getting anywhere, it doesn't make any sense at all why its over £500 a year more expensive to have a bog standard 14 year old car,

Any ideas?

They high premium is probably because standard 106's are driven by young lads and girls and they crash them alot

Can you not add the 106 to your existing policy.

We had some stupid quotes for our Ford Maverick and I got our A6 & Maverick insured for less than my current insurance company wanted for just the Maverick by going with Admiral on a Multicar policy.

I'd phone them rather than using the comparison websites TBH...

that is quite hefty for a 27year old etc, but at least you can get insurance under a grand, currently i am 18 have both a full car and bike license and it is cheaper for me to insure both a winter and summer bike than a single car, with ins for a enduro being 400 full comp and an sv 900 comp, the for a car (no matter what i try) being 3grand+, but insurance does confuse me at times!

Definitely suggest actually talking to a couple of insurance companies directly.

A friend had a vaguely similar problem and after drawing a blank with loads of companies, eventually Aviva offered exactly what they wanted at a sensible cost. They've since migrated all the family cars to Aviva with good multicar discounts. What they do if Aviva decide to hike the renewals to stupid levels I don't know, cross that bridge when they come to it I suppose.

When I was looking at buying my first car last year it was significantly cheaper for me to insure a £10k BMW 1 Series than a £2k much older Ford Fiesta. It is all based on statistics and which you are more likely to crash in. I guess their statistics lead them to the conclusion that you are more likely to take care of your Arosa than you are of a basic old 106.

Have you actually got 7 years no claims bonus? NCB is per vehicle, not for the driver (which is ridiculous I know). So if you have 7 years NCB on your Arosa, you cannot use that on another car. You have to start from scratch with 0 NCB, or split a proportion of the NCB from your Arosa with the Pug.

I ran a modded Skyline GTR and a Corsa at the same time. Skyline was £500 and Corsa was £350. The reason my Skyline was comparitively cheap was because I was with a Jap import specialist. They insure enthusiasts cars, who have a much lower chance of accidents because they care about their cars. Perhaps yours is with a similar insurer, and that explains why it's cheap.

On the flip side, Pugs will be crashed all day by new boyracers and probably stolen a lot, and also used in crash frauds, injury claims etc etc. So basically it's the wrong car to insure cheaply. When it goes off to the broker calculation system (most companies use the same algorithm system) it triggers all the high risk alarms and comes back with a high premium.

yeah I know I can only use it one vehicle.

I have got 7 years that I can use on the pug because im selling the arosa so will have the pug as my main transport.

I will have to ring around in the morning and see what they can do, if not the Peugeot's getting sold

When my friend was asking round there were a couple of companies who offered some NCB for a new policy based on an existing one when insuring 2 cars with the same company, that's largely why they ended up with Aviva, the saving due to some allowed NCB amounted to a pretty big sum.

"heavily modified arosa with over 20 grands worth of bodywork"
