Default Real world mpg

Oh mighty org, I'm considering doing my 80 mile commute on a bike rather than train if it's cheaper.

It is a while since I had my sv and I never really paid attention to the economy ; does anyone know what sort of mpg they're getting?

I'm interested in all answers as I'd have to to buy a bike and will consider most things, not just sv.

I once measured 75 miles to the gallon on the SV on a rare long motorway journey sitting at steady motorway speeds.

Reason I bothered calculating was the odometer was up to 180 (from memory) miles since my last fill up and the light hadn't started coming on.

But yeah, 50 something is probably about right.

on a K7 Twin Spark over 25k i have averaged 61.08mpg, the worst being 55.21mpg and the best being 69.75mpg

i have just put a new rear on so i have gone through 5 rear and 4 front tyres. i'm still on my origonal chain and rear sprocket as i use a scottoiler. serviced every 3.5k

there is a thread on here somewhere where i calculated out the cost of my owning and running the bike per mile and it was about 10p inc insurance etc.etc.

another thing to consider when commuting is clothing, you dont want to be getting cold or wet so unless you already have decent all weather gear you need to invest in some.

I've already got decent kit from last time around, just no bike!

Thanks all for the input so far.

Typically 235 to 243 mile per fill, taking around 16 litres. What ever that works out at. That's cutting it fine, but if I hang on to 243 miles that's four days commuting and I can fill up at the cheap and convenient station. Best mileage 249, best fill up was 16.92L - just 80ml from having to walk.

MPG from new, starts high as running in, but after 3000 miles average of 56.1 mpg for the full 3237 miles. That is recording every fill for 7 months from Sept 1st, when I got the bike new.

But I am quite heavy handed, 6'2" and 17st, probably why less than others.

http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/suz...sinatin/206207 This was my old 2009 bike, got around 60mpg on a 50 mile comute of B and A roads and motorways. My new 2009 bike is doing about the same, engine was dead tight when I bought it but it is loosening up and economy is improving http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/suz...sinatin/345955 (ignore the first fill up, fuelly wont accept that I put 7L in when new and covered 0 miles.) I'm not killing it but I'm making the most of it especially on the B and A roads, due to a strange speedo error sometimes three figures appear on my dash rather than two. I tend to get 200 miles from around or just over 14L as that's where the petrol station falls every fourth day. Can see 250 miles if I'm more gentle, but that's less fun!

I must be doing something wrong, my light came on at 71 miles yesterday. Was a track day though...
