Default Longer lasting Smartphone

I need a new phone. I mostly use it for music, emails and calls but also use it for playing board games (carcassone at the minute, but that sort of thing). Any recommendations?

I've had my second iPhone now for about 2 years, and like the first one, it worked great for 18 months, but now its creaking a bit. Well a lot, Not so much not keeping up with processing power, but dropping out of apps and not responding to taps. I think they have in built obselecense, and I don't want to have to keep upgrading.

Any smart phone...but just never ever update the software.

My sister had up until recently an original iPhone which she had never updated. I ran it side by side my iPhone 4 which had been updated into iOS7 and it was still quicker than mine.

Yah, I never updated the software on either my 3G or 4, but they still started going obsolete after 18 months.

that's pretty much intentional i'd say, (getting my cynical hat on here) so that you have to keep buying a new one and spending more and more money with them!

Yeah they definitely do it. The thing is apps develop themselves up to the latest standard so you shouldn't update them either.

So are they any manufacturers who don't obsolete their phones like that?

I do like the look of the HTC One, but i'm loathe to spend the same money (as well as having to re-buy some of my apps) to get the same problem.

Just got an Xperia Z1 through my company, tad expensive (I wouldn't shell out that much of my "own" money, maybe a Z if it was my cash) but it is a lovely well built quality Android phone and super snappy...should last through quite a few updates and then for some time after that with custom ROMs...

I passed on my old Galaxy Note 1 to the wife after having that since they first came out, it's still going strong with a custom jellybean ROM on it and a fixed USB port (cost £7 for the kit).

Spend money on a "decent" phone and it will last you long enough
