The couple who lived in our house before us had this. All new loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, new double glazing, all on grants.

They came round twice last year offering our estate free cavity insulation - some government target or other ( even though our estate only 20years old and our cavities have expanded polystyrene battens installed already) - I asked them if they were doing a survey of cavity first and the answer was no. Problem is putting the blown insulation into a cavity with existing insulation would have been a disaster anyway. Out of the 10 in our cul-de-sac only two had it done, the rest were better informed and knew that filling up the cavity can cause massive damp problems - I worked with a bloke who needed a dehumidifier running 24/7 after he had his cavities filled, needed it to get rid of damp patches and black mould, he never needed one before he had the cavities blocked up.

It was a hard sell and obvious they weren't getting many takers because of publicity of the damage retrospective cavity wall insulation can cause. One of the sales blokes told my wife 'cavity insulation will become mandatory next year and you won't be able to sell you house without it' - I wrote to my local council ( who were controlling the contractors) and my MP about the blatant lies being told - we never had them call again at our house.

Article here http://www.askjeff.co.uk/cavity-wall-fill/ about cavity insulation by building guru Jeff Howells, on top of all the other problems it can cause he also mentions ant infestations.... ( also corroding of wall ties etc. )
