Default decorating

I'm decorating my dining room, it was papered. I've stripped the paper and found the walls were previously painted -red on two walls, white on one and yellow/gold on another (yikes). Most of the big areas of paint have been removed when the paper came off but there are still a few largish patches.

My plan is to repaint with a textured paint which I've bought (Crown Suede). I scraped and sanded the walls, filled the holes, sanded again but everytime I turn my back I see a bit of paint that is starting to flake despite having been previously scraped.

It's like being exposed to air is making the old paint catch up with its age. Out of curiosity, I sanded one spot, scraped it again - no loose paint. 30 minutes later there was an edge starting to lift.

I wonder if I leave it long enough it will all fall off

You're finding out why it was papered...?
Best solution... paper it again.

I put 65 grade sandpaper on my sander and it's doing the trick - I've got 90% of the walls done. I also discovered that hooking up a vacuum line to the sander, as the manufacturers suggested, makes an immense difference to dust levels.

Pity, I didn't do it until after the dust has spread around every room in the house.

Gypsum is natural so it's good for you, right?

We were finding dust from sorting our walls out everywhere in our house for years after I did the work. We had similar. Walls held together by the paper. Thick, textured, pink and purple paper.... everywhere!

I have always preferred painted walls to paper, but in some houses the paper was on to keep the walls together, and in one house that had been papered, then the paper had been painted, then papered over and then painted ( this had been repeated about 6 times ) and trying to get paper off and back to bare plaster took forever......

You need good walls to look good just painted...
