Matt is it possible that the dainty frame of Maria holding or leaning on you has caused this? there is a fair gap between rider and pillion and sometimes the pillion gets into the habit of leaning onto the back of the rider so they feel closer as opposed to shuffling their bum forward and gripping with their knees.
Its a possibility.

I felt in pretty great shape when I got home, my brain was a bit frazzled from nighttime motorway riding in the p***ing rain- couldn't see enough and it totally got to me- but physically I was fine. Despite somehow deflating my air mattress on saturday night, and using my topbox for a pillow

Long ride? It's only Somerset.

It was long enough for me

On another note, I think my achey back may be to do with my back protector - i think its a bit long. I wasn't given any help in selecting the right size for me when I brought it
