thats clever. i know they were working on film cameras that done the same thing so it looked more "real life" rather than in focus with blurring in the background with close up shots.

Much more sophisticated. They're building nanometer sized structures which interact directly with photons to change their direction and polarization. It's not really refraction in the same sense as you get when moving from one material to another in a lens (fresnel or regular).

That is clever. Bibs, the old point and shoot film cameras were just using a big depth of field, and slow shutter speed to match the small aperture, and sometimes a shorter focal length lens as it has a naturally greater depth of field. All basically a compromise that meant most things should be in focus.
