Default Why are chains gold?

Just wondering what the gold coating is on the chains. The manufacturer websites don't tell you much about what their materials really are. Could it be titanium nitride?

I dont think its titanium nitride, that is often applied as a low-friction coating, which would be better spent on the rollers of the chain? Not sure. Anyway, if - like me - you clean the chain quite regularly as part of general maintinance, the gold starts to wear off. I replaced my gold chain with a regular greay chain, saved 10 quid. Still gets treated the same (washed with parraffin every 2 weeks and lubed regularly).

Wierdo! I dont think i have even clenaed this chain and its down 14k. The scotoiler does a fiar job, but if i clena it, it goes rusty, or that should be, when i cleaned the old one, it went rusty!
