Default Click of Doom (Speed Triple)

When I press the starter on my Speed Triple, I'm getting a click and the starter is not turning over. It was then starting on the second press of the button. Today, it's taking several presses before it starts. Any ideas what might be wrong? I'm wondering if the battery is getting low on charge. I'm only using the bike for about an hour a day (two half hour commutes).

I had the EXACT same issue on the SV at first.

Hit the starter, and you got "click click click click click" at a rate of something like 4-5 clicks/sec. Sometimes it'd start, othertimes it wouldn't. My case wasn't a case of 2nd time & she fires. Usually the battery would go flat, after around 10 tries, and then there's no hope at all. Stick the battery on charge overnight, back to normal, ride for a bit, and next time you start up, the clicks return.

What was the problem? Stealership had forgotten to plug the Reg./Rect. in and I was such a novice that I didn't even realise the connection was loose to say the least!

With 2 half hour runs, it should be good enough to ram the battery some charge in. I'd suspect your Reg./Rect. is pretty goosed.

Sincerely, Mechanical Numpty

Solenoid? Give it a tap, they can stick.

Low battery?

also check the earth lead and battery connections, if any of those are not tight it can cause the same thing.

Cheers Mark.

Sounds exactly like Spidys problem, in the end it was a duff battery.

Thanks guys. I'm suspecting the solenoid at present. I just poked it with my finger and the bike started first press afterwards. I'll check it out properly when I get home, which won't be until the weekend.

stick the battery on charge, the symptoms you describe sound like a flat battery to me.

also check connections, check there is enough fluid in the battery if its not a sealed battery.

Weak battery can have the same effect i discovered. Mine did eventualy turn out to be the battery, a new one at that, was a duff and not holding a charge well.
replacement battery in now and its been fine since. (touches wood)

I do a similar amount of mines diaily and o wonder if i'm using more battery power then i'm replacing but i guess if i get a click anytime soon i'll make sure i stick it on the optimate overnight and get a full charge into it.

The bike's only a year and a half old, so hopefully the battery isn't knackered already. I'll stick it on to charge over the weekend.

Assuming thats the case, I'd also be wanting to know WHY the battery was flat? Is it the short runs? Is it the R./R. ? Electrical problems? etc etc

Never fix the symptom only, it proves expensive & repetitive
