Default Rattle / grindy noise

My 2000 curvy has a rattle / grindy noise when accelerating.

It only does it under moderate and hard acceleration, not low acceleration.

It’s hard to pin point where it’s coming from, I think the engine rather than the gear box.

I doesn’t do it when just revving the engine in neutral.

I doesn’t do it in gear when on a stand with the wheel off the ground.

It doesn’t do it when keeping a constant speed.

It doesn’t do it when I pull the clutch in and coast.

Any ideas?

TIA

Rob.

Not much to go on. How many miles? Cam chain tensioners are a frequent source of noise on the SV although you tend to hear them all the time. If your exhaust is original might be an exhaust leak. If you have high mileage perhaps piston slap. You haven't let your oil level drop, have you?

Mileage is 36k.
I'd dont think cam chain as it would be all the time as you said.
The exhaust is original, and judging by the condition of the front studs and the gaskets it hasn't been maintained in a while. I might take it off and give it some care and attention.

I'd look at the connection where the two headers meet under the engine - that clamp often rots. I would be reluctant to remove the headers because of stud breakage as glang mentioned.

What's the condition of your drive chain?

Have you checked the condition of your chain and the tension?

I'd be checking chain and sprockets.

And the rear wheel alignment, if the rear sprocket is at an angle to chain then all kinds of noises can happen, and as noise not there in neutral and only under load deffo a transmission related noise.

UPDATE

So I took the carbs of this weekend and cleaned them, new seals etc. and the noise has gone.

Three things I sorted:

1) there was a lot of gunk / debris in the front carb
2) the two wires to the bottom are the front carb weren't connected (carb heater?)

3) the rubber boot connecting the front carb to the cylinder was pinched / mis-formed

I think of these, number 3 is the most likely to cause a noise if it wasn't getting proper seal.

Any way, its sorted now I hope...
