Default Oil Loss, too much?

Just checked my oil window and noticed there wasnt anything there, so just topped it up but had to put 800ml of oil in before it got to the minimim mark. My oil light hasnt come on at all and i only done a oil and oil filter change 3500 miles ago. Is this loss normal or is there something i should be worried about? The bike was level when i checked it.

Did you run it after the filter change and top it up?

So the oil can disappear for a couple of reasons. Leak, any suspicious puddles under the bike. Burning, any smoke coming from the exhaust?

Did you change the filter?

There's quite a lot of oil left in the old filter which is why you check your level after starting the engine to allow oil to get into places like the new filter. As you said that you've done that, I'd just keep an eye on the level for the next few weeks and see if it drops anymore.

Yeah ill keep a eye on it and see what happens. I have just started the bike to look for smoke as cant see it when riding but had the usual white smoke at start (water vapour) but once it warmed up i revved it a few times and its puffing out blue smoke, does that mean burning oil?

Yeah, blue smoke is burning oil, black smoke is rich mixture

I found that putting a clean piece or two of A4 paper under bike when it is parked overnight is a good way to see if anything leaking ....

Blue smoke is burnt oil.

Reving a cold engine might give a bit of blue smoke especially on an older engine.

If there is a problem it'll do it when the engine is hot too.

Ill try that with the paper see if that shows any leaks but for now ill keep an eye on the oil level as ive topped it back to full and see how long it lasts until it drops again
