First post- 99 curvy exhaust issue
Evening folks, first post here. I am the proud owner of a newly acquired 99 curvy. It's been neglected a bit over the years and I'm in the process of putting wrongs right. My focus at the minute is on the exhaust/front cylinder. The mounts are rusted to heck, and there is a split where the downpipe and cylinder meet.
Is it feasible to weld this crack? Or is a new cylinder required? I plan to refurbish the flange etc, but the nuts are not budging due to corrosion. Could I cold chisel or cut the nuts off, rethread the bolts and replace the flange? Appreciate any help, I'm no mechanic but know my way around tools. Thanks guys |

Think I remember a similar cracked flange before, and if you're planing to take the head off, then do as you've planned. Cut the nuts off, as you probably won't get the exhaust stud off, without it snapping.
Then get the stud spark eroded out, as it'll save re tapping the thread. At the same time get someone to weld that piece back Replace with stainless studs and nuts

Or buy a new head, there's a complete one on eBay for £25. How much is a welder going to cost?

Re: First post- 99 curvy exhaust issue
I recently had to hack the nuts off my front exhaust pipe. I used an oscillating saw with a metal blade on the outer one and a grinding disk in my dremel for the one next to the cam chain. I then used a reverse drill chuck type stud extractor and an impact wrench to remove the remains of the studs. Be patient when grinding. I had to keep stopping when the dremel got to hot to hold.
If you use stainless studs and nuts to replace the originals remember to use copper grease between the buts and the studs or they will cold weld together so leave you no better off than with mild steel ones. |
