Fitting a Powerbronze Airflow screen

Bought one of these today.

Thought I could fit it in 10 minutes. Wrong!

Got the four Allen bolts and two screws off no problem, but what's the story with the rubber grommets?

I just can't seem to figure out what happens to them. Do you poke them through, and if so how do you get them back?

I made up this tool after getting fed up with the rubbers disappearing into the fairing.. Used a long bolt and nut plus a penny washer.



You need to position the screen first and then put in the two front grommets first. Sliding a hand down on the instrument side to support the screen as you push the grommets in using the tool. WD40 or similar helps the grommets to slide through. You need the "bulgy" bit of the grommet behind the screen not between screen and plastics. The two side grommets should then go in easily.

Can't honestly say I have ever had problems with them. Possibly a bit tricky getting them out but I just pull them out carefully by holdind the outside of them. Putting them back in is a doddle.
Once you have taken them out, put them in a cup of hot water.
Go back to the bike and take out the 2 screws and then the old screen.
Position the new screen (making sure you do not fold the spongey type strips)
Put the 2 screwws back in (loosely)
Get the rubber bits out of the, now warm, water and re fit them. They go back to their original shape after being in the water for a few minutes so go back in easy.
Then just refit the allen bolts. Job done.

Yep, the hot water trick works wonders on straightening your rubbers.

So are you guys talking about the OEM bungs that have an extra "bulge" in them. I can understand the straight bungs, the type you get with aftermarket bolts, doing what you discribe but I'm sure there is no way that bulge is gonna disappear with some hot water oooeer.

Pic below is of the two types. OEM curvy on the right.

Mine are like both......................

When I take them out they are the ones on the right.
After sitting in warm water they are the ones on the left.

Hmmmm. I just bought a couple of spare ones from Robinsons and they were bulgeless. I thought they were the wrong ones, but it seems they set with the bulge and warming them up allows to revert to the original state. Excellent. Something new and useful learnt.

When I got my first Airblade screen, I made the mistake of changing it at the dealers. Over 2 hours and still not done. In the end the mechanic took pity on me and helped. But it still took an age after that. Kept losing the bungs. Wish I'd have known about hot water then!

In summary, the grommets are an absolute bugg3r to get out, but easy peasy to put back after a gentle soak in hot water.

Hot water is suprisingly useful stuff, great for getting brake seals n such back to shape
