Default Balancing carbs - one way.

Hi All

I found this online, a great set of instructions for balancing the carbs on an SV which may well be on here but I could not find them

Aye, it's been up before a few times.

Good run through to give you an idea of what to expect, but that whole site bugs me, it shows one flawed method (for anything they mention basically), and claims it as gospel.

That carb balancing method is very complicated. Complicated means points of failure, vacuum leaks and breaking down. Complicated = bad!

Much more simple is to just run one tube from front pot, plug it with a bolt when you are not using it.

FWIW I wouldn't use those gauges, Davida or Morgan Carbtune are worth the money. you only need a pair anyway, for a twin or four (never worked on a triple)

You only ever need 1 pair - it just takes longer if you have more carbs/throttle bodies!

I've got a set of Davida gauges, I can't say I'd absolutely recommend them as the damping, which can't be adjusted, is off on one of mine and this make adjusting a little bit more guesswork, although not impossible.

I'd have a 4-set of carbtunes any day. The difference in price is well worth offsetting the pain in the arris trying to do a 4 cyl bike with 2 gauges.

Fo' shizzle YC, I bought a pair cos I couldn't afford any more! It's just nice to know for those who can't afford 4 decent ones and look at 4 crap ones or a pair of decent ones

I had a carbtune. The rods get a slight furring on them and they give inconsitent readings. next time you're using a carbtune flick the display and I bet the reading changes.

I set up my BMWs TBs with a Twinmax after getting fed up with the carbtune. Bike was much smoother with the Twinmax.

Carbtune were probably better when they used mercury in the gauges, but because of the obvious risks, they went over to the stainless rods. I've got a mark 2 Carbtune, but haven't used it yet, so I can't comment. The mark 1 carbutune was very good on my twins & IL4's. You could hear all the clutch rattle and intenal engine noises decrease when the carbs were in perfect sync.

I like the look of the twinmax gauge though

Funny enough back when I had my BMW the guy from GS shop preferred his mercury sticks to the Twinmax. Dunno whether they were carbtune ones or if he still feels the same today but back then he did. I regret selling my Twinmax. Still dont knwo why I did. One of my lifes great mysteries I suppose, bit like why on earth I sold my Abba stand?

Yes, I regret selling (or giving away) my Mk1 carbtunes on a bike sale ages ago. But I never thought I'd need them again. Silly me

Selling your ABBA stand, that's plain daft

But if people didn't I wouldn't have mine
