Yeah they made it. Very bloody lucky. Imagine jumping out of a plane at that speed, 400mph! Gonna leave a mark (kinda brown and streaky!).

the cloud around the plane is a shock wave...this is the sound barrier being broken...which at sea level is around 700mph!

Correct, but once the aircraft lost most of it's rear end it slowed down to a measly 400mph (ish) which was a guess by the investigators. Ejecting at 700mph would be fatal in all senses of the word. Don't think there would have been enough to fill a pizza box was the technical term!
