Raspberry Pi zero (£10) with a 5M OV5647 camera off ebay (£5), it's capable of 1080p but set to 640x480 to save bandwidth and make it more mobile data compatible. Door bell wired to GPIO input with a python script to fire off the FB message (motion also sends a message as a belt and braces approach).

Web cam software is "motion" which streams at 2fps until it sees some activity then raises it to 25fps. Motion recordings go to the NAS.

The Pi also runs OpenVPN so I've got a secure method to connect without opening ports on the router, if we are ever allowed to leave the house again. Just access it through a browser.

All software is open source and subscription free. Took about 2 hours to set up, there are several guides on the web, most of the time is tweaking config files.

Wasn't planning on doing the 2 way conversation thing, probably possible though. I'd need a small amplifier (pi only has a headphone output) and a waterproof housing for it.

Cheers, does the Pi and the NAS do all of it or have you got a pc( or server) acting as a server somewhere?

Pi is the server, don't need an external pc.

Although the NAS is another Pi (3B+) which, to give it something to do also runs PiHole a network level DNS filter to remove ads and trackers.

The doorcam is currently running at 28% load (average), so it's still got a bit of spare capacity if I want to add more stuff.

One thing you need to take into account is the disk space used, the doorcam will try to record everything and has no disk management function. I'll need to set something on the NAS to monitor folder size and remove old recordings.

Today I have shortened and refit the end can and fit the new rear hugger that was waiting for me when I got home from work.

And seeing as I was in the mood for tinkering, I've fitted the new belly pan too

Looks like you've got part of a crash bung.

Well spotted, it came with a pair, I've removed them.
I'm trying to decide if they're going back on or coming off completely.
They looked ridiculous in my opinion but that may come back to bite me on the bum !!
