Default spit and polish

Just wanted to say hi and start off with a quick question.

My boyfriend (mpaton2005) always says to me "if you even need to know anything about bikes and i'm not around, go on sv650.org" so here i am...

I'm in the process of trying to get the chain "gunk" of my bike and someone recommended that i use meths but i dont have any, will white spirit do the same job?

Hey,

I'd be dubious of using white spirit as it could damage the o-rings in the chain, though I'm not sure of this. Paraffin works very well or WD40 if it's all you've got.

its not the actual chain im trying to get the gunk off, its the metal part just in fron of the back tyre (although i doubt thats the technical term ) will wd40 be ok on that too?

P.S. just incase that part doesnt even exist on an SV, i have a suzuki vanvan

If you mean the spiky metal thing that the chain goes round, that's called the rear sprocket, all chain driven bikes have one of those.
Will be fine for cleaning that.

Are they chain driven without a rear sprocket? I'd like to see that!

As Carsick says, WD40 or paraffin for removing the sticky gunk that's either on the chain, the sprockets, the wheel or the swingarm (bit that holds the wheel on).

Interestingly Pledge or Mr Sheen will do nicely too.

Did you know that WD40 was invented in 1953 by The Rocket Chemical Company, a fledgling company called Rocket Chemical Company of San Deigo California ? It took them 40 attempts to get formula right. The even have a fan club you will find them at: http://fanclub.wd40.com/login.cfm
