Goodby Gear shifter :(

Lucky it was only at low speed:





K7 pointy with 1600 miles on the clock, thought twas a slack chain that was causing the dodgy upshifts.

Any idea what caused it or what I need to do to fix it?

Anybody else had this happen?

All you need is a circlip - so about 50p to fix.

Had that happen to me after the circlip had been weakened when it was taken off using screwdrivers rather than circlip pliers when I had the other associated failure of the pointy gear pivot when the whole bolt comes out of the frame.

LOL - I got my replacement circlip from a motor factors down at Stockwell, gave me it and a couple of others for nothing so was a free repair for me.

Good to see that Suzuki have addressed this cheap and easy to fix (not to mention potentially very dangerous) flaw in the SV since we brought it to their attention in 2004.

Yep, tbh it is an easy design fix, seems a silly way to attach it in the first place!

Suzuki wouldn't order me in any as "I would have to pay for the parts before ordering"

Contain a fitment that will "fit"

There were two types one that would fit on by hand (if you pull on the sifter it will pop off) or the type that need pliers to apply (can't oull off by hard pulling!) I chose the later one.

More interestingly (and the point of another post ) the washer actually weakens the clip! (both push on and the size that requires pliers!)

The only reason for the washer (that I can see) is to stop the minimal movement of the shifter, however even with the free play, the washer less one was considerably stronger, so much that the bike could be pulled over with just the shifter

I have decided to run washer less, I doubt the washer I have are any different to the suzuki ones (same with circlip) so maybe the washer causes early failure?

There was a spanner monkey around that area though, the rubber foot shifter was loose

Will take the "pop on by hand" ones with me (keep in bag) so that should for some reason it pop off again I can temp pop it on to fix it
