My New SV650 Won't Start.
Hi Guys,
I recently bought an SV650S. It's a 2001 SK1. Fully faired. It was delivered last thursday and when the guy got it out of the van he fired it up and i saw it running. The engine sounded good and no spluttering or anything. Since then I havent been able to get it to start. It turns over but won't fire. i've tried it with ever conbination of choke and throttle amounts but nothing. I have changed the plugs. Checked they are sparking and they are. I am trying with the side stand up and the clutch in. The killswitch is not on either. Like i said it turns over but doesnt fire. I have charged the battery right up and no use either. The fuel was very low when I got it so i put £5 of fresh petrol in it from a can. When you try turn it over for ages it backfires so it doesnt appear to be a fuel problem. It does sound like it's close to going and you can kinda hear the engine/exhaust bubbling but it just won't fire up properly! My thought was maybe the fuel is off and the delivery guy just used what was left in the lines, but as far as I can tell it doesnt have a fuel switch. I have checked all fuses etc and all is fine there. All the electrics work fine. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance! Toby |

If it's turning over "for ages" probably OK...
You need three things for the engine to run, fuel, compression and ignition If you're getting fuel into the engine (can you smell unburnt fuel after it turns over for a while?) then you might check your spark plugs to see if they're both firing

aye and if he's been turning it over "for ages" and its not fired up good chance the battery could be a bit drained by now eh?

When he says "...it turns over but doesn't fire" it kind of gives the impression that the problem is not the battery, he also states that he has charged the battery... If it's been spun over for ages then yes, the battery may be drained now, but charging the battery won't fix the problem that caused the engine not to fire in the first place...

Re: My New SV650 Won't Start! HELP!
Thanks for your replies.
Both plugs are firing and the battery has been charged after both sessions of trying to turn over. On the optimate it comes back as being fully charged and in tip top conditon. The optimate is brand new so it shouldn't be diagnosing it wrong. I will await more replies! |

The optimate can give a battery a clean bill of health when the battery is toast, but if yours is turning the engine happily it sounds fine Has the bike sat unused for a while? If the fuel in the carbs has gummed up you may not be getting fuel through into the chamber, can you smell unburnt fuel after it's turned over for a bit?

I was under the impression there's a fuel tap on the curvy model?
Check the fuel filter between the tank and the carbs. |
