I may just point Lady Poppy towards this one as a Nifty Fifty at this price would be a nice Chrimbo pressie.

Richie, would this compliment my rather spiffing 70-300?

Lou, it's classed as a prime lens.

A 50mm used to be the standard lens shipped with a 35mm film camera. modern DSLR's are either "full frame", ie the same size sensor as a 35 mm negative, or a "crop sensor" that's a bit smaller. If you have a Canon, and it was less than £1000, it'll be the smaller one.

The smaller size has a magnification factor of 1.6 on a lens like this. In other words, it has an a real focal length on a crop sensor body of 80mm which is classed as a portrait lens.

If you can stand to have a narrower angle of view, then it'll be fine.

I'm trying to justify the EOS 6D. Then the 7D mark two came out...

Good job I've no money really!

I have a 50mm 1.8 which I got shortly after my 400d.

It's not the fastest to focus, and feels quite cheap, but is absolutely lovely when it comes to picture quality.

I went on to buy a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 as I got upset not being able to let more light in more of the time, so use it a little less than I used to. The 50mm 1.8 is not a very logical walkabout lens, but if you're going to try and take a set portrait it'svery good.

So, great for taking people shots.

I've a 100d. The quality of photographs is already pretty damn good. I'm certain it mirrors the 700d on many of its attributes. It's just tiny, and made for girly fingers
