Default service costs - this about right?

right then my bike has no service history to speak of and dont now whats been done and what hasnt so thinking of getting a full service...although you can remove any u dont want doing and just choose the ones you do want doing and the bloke will do only them...

so to follow is a list of things he does and a price;s

if the .org could advise on what best to get done from the list it would be most helpfull..thanks in advance...

(also i have put notes and questions in brackets next to some)

ok...basic service list and cost

lube and grease as required (i do this anyway)
check brake wear
adjust & lube chain (i do this anyway)
adjust and lube cables
set tyre pressures ( i do this anyway)
check condition of tyres (err pretty simple)
change or clean air filter (not needed just bough BMC road)
clean & drain filter box
top up battery and clean (not a top up type on sv is it?)
clean or renew spark plugs (should i get new anyway?)
regap points and set timing
check fuel lines
adjust tickover (easy im happy how it is)
change oil and filter
check headstock bearing
check wheel bearings
check wheel rims and spokes
check swing arm bearings
top up break fluid (i do this anyway)
check lights/horn etc. (i do this anyway)

thats the basic = £98 + parts + VAT

the middle one is all of the above plus...

check coolant ( i do this anyway)
adjust fuel mixture
clean or change fuel filter
balance carbs (should get this done its on 34500 miles)
drain fuel bowls
check brake performance

thats the middle one = £160 + parts + VAT

the major one is all of the above 2 plus....

decocke exhaust baffles (whats that?)
check valve clearances
service brakes
change gearbox oil
change shaft oil
change fork oil (lots of threads mention heavier oil in the forks makes an improvement, what oil should i ask him to put in?)

£220 + parts + Vat...

sorry its a long one but id rather get this right and anyone who can actually be arsed to reply to all this shall be given 7 virgins

Dappa D

oh and as i dont trust myself to remove my full exhaust system he will also remove this for me when i take it in...ill take it away and get handy with the wet and dry / autosol and take it back in all shiny and new to be refitted....

Change gearbox oil? I assumed the oil you put in a motorcycle engine not only lubricates the engine, it also lubricates the clutch and the gearbox aswell. Infact, I firmly believe that to be correct

How many miles has the bike done?

Some of these things you might be able to learn to do yourself, for example brake calipers are prety easy to work on, and changing the oil and filter isnt hard either. You could save a bit of money that way?

I'd definatly do fluid changes (oil, coolant, brake fluid), and depending on the milage valve clearences and change the spark plugs (I just had mine changed after 10,000 miles of operation)

This list is rather generic. Some bits are not relevant to the SV (gearbox oil being a good example, the SV uses a shared engine / gearbox oil).

If you have no idea when the valve clearances were checked get them done. You may be best off getting the list of tasks from a Haynes manual for a major service and getting him to quote for that.

good shout...didnt think of that, ive got the haynes so will have a gander...

yes it is a generic one sorry i just picked up what he gives out...

its on 34500 miles

as for learning to do the brakes...i probably could but i really dont trust myself / skill level / have the time etc to do this...and brakes isnt something id like to risk gettin wrong!!

so far definates would appear to be

valve clearences,
plugs
fluids

D,

See my past recommendation - as you'll see this absolutely obliterates the pricing you were given for a minor service.

Rich is top bloke, tell him I sent you.

Definatly valve clearences at those miles. What year is your bike? My '99 SV had its valve clearences checked recently, but a cam follower (bucket shaped thingy between the valve and the cam shaft, i think) had to be replaced, the hard-casing material had worn away...aparently, this was a general problem with those parts made by suzuki at that time, TL1000's had the same problem. I need another one replaced, but the rear shock has to come out to get to that, so when i get a new rear shock I'll do that aswell. My dad paid £50 for ONE cam follower.....
