Default Honda VFR... No thanks!

I had a day trip out today and after finishing what I had set out to do, I wandered off to Fowlers and had a mooch about.

Then I saw it!

A Dark Blue, 02 plate, VFR800 going for £3.5K. I have loved the Honda VFR for years and gave serious thought to chopping in my SV. That was until I tried it in the show room.

It was a strange thing to be so disappointed by something that I thought would be amazing, but was actually mundane. The seat had been chopped down for short legs and what was left was like a plank coated with a Karimat! The riding position was then all wrong and the previous owner had bodged a metal plate onto the rear brake leaver that made it look like an oil rig! Then they offered me £1.6K for my SV, providing I put it back to stock. I did not even ask if I could take it for a test ride. This is sad, I have wanted a VFR for so long and it now turns out that I don't like them!

So what will I do when my Trusty Sylvie is old and worn and my hips too battered to climb on? Damn, guess I will have to buy a BMW!

Correction - you didn't like this particular VFR. Try others, you may be ok with them. Some owners modify their bikes beyond what is good for anyone. If Fowlers want you to put your bike back to stock, they really ought to do something about making this VFR stock as well if you want to buy it.

I asked the Salesguy about the VFR seat and he was pretty certain that it was stock. However, I don't see Honda putting out a Sports touring bike with padding on the seat that is less than an inch thick and having my knees almost touching my torso when riding! There is of course the weird chance that I am just a funny shape I suppose!

You are most probably right about this particular bike, cheers Lozzo.

It was still a big disappointment though, I thought that it would feel amazing and it didn't. I also had a look at a CB1000, but it just felt uninspiring. The only bike that I have seen that I actually find as comfortable and as nice to sit on as my SV has been a Kawasaki Versys. If I see one of them going for a good price, I may have to sell the SV.

For now though, my SV is just about perfect, the bars are in the perfect place, the brakes are just how I like them and the ride is fun, it just needs a few quid throwing at it to make it feel slightly more alive on the road and then to get rid of the the restriction, which is April next year.

Sounds like that was a bad example and I will second lozzo suggestion to try others for size. Sounds very expensive for an 02 bike, even if it was an early VTEC.

I'll admit I quite like my brothers pre Vtec and push it some and it sings, sweet engine in those, but it does sound like you got a bad one there as I've never sat on an uncomfortable one.

Cheers Mark.

The one I looked at today was Pre V-Tech, not that I know what a Post V-Tech is if I am honest. Off to look at google until I know.

As some have already said I wouldn't end your love affair over just the one encounter, and especially not before you have ridden one. The VFR engine is one it's most endearing features and wins many hearts.....
