Default Recommend a Hotel in Edinburgh

After a hotel in Edinburgh. one possibly two nights in July. Expedia et al all seem expensive for the city centre. Was wondering if anyone knows of any 'hidden gems' around the city or within it for a weekend break?

Need to be able to get into the city easily by public transport / taxi / walking.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Last year we went for a long weekend. We stayed in a Travellodge Hotel. It was clean, cheap and only about 15 minutes per bus to the city centre. The breakfast wasn't too bad either.
It wasn't glamorous but good value for money.

Have a nice time.

The Premier Travel Inn is £67 per night per room and both Haymarket and Lauriston Place are very central. £7.50 for breakfast but plenty wee cafes where you could get breakfast for half that.

Thanks guys, but was looking for something a bit more intimate. I am happy to pay for a decent place, but a lot of city centre places seem over priced at ?150+ for one night. Guess that is city prices though eh?

One advantage to Agenda is that it's alongside the St Johns curry club, I can recommend the curry club I've drunk at Agenda but not stayed, we use the Holiday Inn 2 minues further into town.

Did a very long weekend here with the missus a couple of years ago and it was great:

Its got a strip joint just round the corner but its a very nice place to stay and within an easy walk of the middle of town. Secure gated parking round the back (we didnt move the car the whole time we were there tho) and its got the grassmarket area just round the corner where you really need to go the french restaurant there

Was so nice might go again this year ......................

Knights Residence is pretty pricy though...

You might find that a lot of the hotels will bump their rates up during the summer because of the Festival. I normally just stay at the IBIS because of it's location (slap bang in the City Centre, just off the Royal Mile - it's a perfect location for seeing the city). It's modern, reasonably priced & clean etc.

(Go to Google Maps and type in Edinburgh - zoom in & the Ibis is in the exact spot where it says 'Edinburgh'....)

Romantic it's not, but those kind of hotels in Edinburgh come at a premium at the best of times, never mind during the Festival.

If you're looking for something a bit more upmarket, I'd suggest using a combination of www.laterooms.com & www.tripadvisor.com - between those two sites you'll find somewhere I'm pretty certain.

I spent a few years living up there, so if you need any advice about where stuff is etc let me know
