How do these work
OK call me stupid.
I bought these stud extractors, they didn't have any instructions & I can't work out how to use them. I e,mailed the manufacturers but whilst they were happy to take my money they have not been so forthcoming with help. There are 4 installers & 4 extractors, has anybody any idea how to use the extractor? http://www.bergentoolsdirect.co.uk/p...ller-set-5809/ Thanks

Re: How do these work
if they are what i think they are you just pop the socket onto the stud and turn it. the concentric bearing inside grips the wall of the stud and tightens up as you turn. TBH they are fine for 'good' studs but not that good for rusted/seized ones.
two nuts tightened against each other work just as well. |

There is not enough of the stud left to get 2 nuts onto or else I would have tried that first. I bought these extractors as the access is restricted (left hand exhaust clamp stud on the front cylinder) & they are slim enough to go over the stud . Onto plan B what ever that might be

Re: How do these work
Bit of local heat works well with steel screwed into aluminium, the the aluminium expands more than the steel and takes pressure away from the steel thread.

Re: How do these work
Thanks I was hoping to heat the stud up and then use the extractor on it while it was still hot

Re: How do these work
Finally got the stud out, I took the engine to a local engineering company who puddle welded (mig) a larger size nut onto the M8 stud. Then while it was still warm loosened/tightened the stud bit by bit until it came out nice and clean. Stainless steel replacement sourced.
It was a lot of faffing about but all's well etc.etc. Lesson learnt, be more wary and/or less clumsy then the next time i need to take one out.

Re: How do these work
They're very easy to snap, even with care
