Default Paraffin - where from?

Went to clean son's bike chain but have run out of paraffin, tried to get some but could only find it in a camping shop at £17 for 4 litres! Stupid price. Used to be less than half the price of petrol. Who stocks it now? local garages no longer sell it. Thanks, Dave

Most supermarket... White spirit = pence, same product slightly less refined.

Yep, got some from my local hardware store (S&M Supplies ohhh errrr). £6.99 for 4 litres, but only £1.20 a litre for a fill up if I take empty bottle back when I need some.

Local shell garage has it here, £5 for 4 Litres and lasts aaaaaaaaaaaages. I catch most of what I use on the chain in a glass coffee jar (kettenmax chain cleaner) and let all the crud settle out, pour off the clean stuff for re-use and bin the dregs.

Parafin
Paracene
Kerosene
Diesel
Heating oil

Even WD-40 is a good cleaner/de-greaser... not much cop as a lubricant though.

Everything I have ever seen about wd40 says the opposite. In my naive days I used to use it on my bike chains for cleaning and I reckon despite looking sparkly clean, they never lasted long after. It seems it penetrates too well, getting into all the seals and internal surfaces of the chain as well as the bits the sprockets ride on. It therefore forces out the heavier factory grease, from the bits that dont actually need cleaning but do most of the work of the chain. This means they simply fail sooner.

I have been known to use it for de-greasing (and it does shift it well) but as I said, I use parafin on the chain, I possibly got the wrong end of the stick from the OP but I got the impression he was on about a push bike?
