anyone own a sv1000?
so i have a 03 pointy 650 at the moment but in the spring im looking at upgrading to potentially a sv1000, just want to gather people thoughts on these. the 650 suits me perfectly with height and shape wise, its really comfortable when riding long distance and the power is there when needed. if i get the 1000 will i be giving up anything from the 650? i.e. height or comfort? i know the weight and handling will be different due to a much bigger engine and i know there are other bikes out there but i truely love the sv's

Re: anyone own a sv1000?
Yep, had mine 6 years and love it. It's like having a big soppy Rottweiler.
Here's a long link where folks discuss it I went from a 650 to a thou. I was warned of heaviness, poor handling, massive consumption of fuel tyres & chains etc. It does like the drink fuel but the rest of the scare stories are just nonsense. I get up to 10k from a rear tyre and my chain is currently >20k but perhaps I just ride like a limp wristed girlie. It's a completely different bike to the 650, looks similar but pretty much everything is turned up to 12. Takes a bit of getting used to but if you ride "properly" you'll soon get used to it. If on the other-hand you are fighting your bike around corners you'll be in for an over-interesting time when you double the oompf. Everyone that rides mine gets off with a massive grin and the statement "That's bloody mental". However if you want silky smooth sophisticated power, look elsewhere.

Interesting reading, I definitely fancy a svthou one day. A friend had a TL with a race system, my god that sounded amazing.

Re: anyone own a sv1000?
Like Tony and Mark, I have had mine for a long time ( 6+ years )and still love it, as I mentioned in the thread in the link. It has now done 25K and is about to do it's 29th Track Day with hardley any problems. I've had to replace a rear exhaust gasket and consumables and that's it. It still good on fuel and if I do my 90 mile round trip commute on it I get about 50 mpg averaging 85 - 90 mph. Handling is still ace though I did have the standard rear shock rebuilt last winter for £130 at KAIS. PM me for any ifo you want.
Here is the thou doing a lap on Donington on standard suspension.

Re: anyone own a sv1000?
I had one, great bike good all rounder really. As previously stated don't necessarily listen to the horror stories about fuel, chains etc, I used to get 48mpg regularly and a back tyre lasted just over 10K.
Really sorry that I sold it now, but hey that's the way life goes!! |

Re: anyone own a sv1000?
some basic comparisons on dry weight (add 16-18kg for wet weight inc full tank of petrol)
Hayabusa k5 215kg SV1000 k5 189kg GSXR1000 k5 166KG Sv650s K5 165kg GSXR750 K5 163kg GSXR600 k5 161kg 24kg difference between the SV650 and the SV1000 which is about 3.5stone. interestingly the SV650 is only 1kg (2.2lb) lighter than a GSXR1000. |
