Default UK import Duty from non EU countries

Does anyone have any ideas how to calculate what import duty?
The Web has let me down on this one.
Do they make it up as they go along??
Of to collect the dog Next Tuesday.

Depends on where its coming from

No, they don't make it up as they go along, the Customs Tariff is about 3 inches thick with all the various duty rates.

Expect to get charged if you're importing from the USA. I did the other month, as did my wife on parcels arriving from there.

The carrier (royal mail, UPS, Fed Ex, etc etc) will also include their 'ADMIN' fee

That checker doesn't include a real life dog!
Is there a maximum % of the purchase cost?
It's comming from New Zealand

Ah an unusual import

It'll be in the tariff somewhere, live animals dogs, cats, lizards. They all have a value, so the duty calculation is based on that.

Sometimes the duty rates are high to deter imports of this kind, but its based on government policy or some international agreement, linked to stopping the spread of animal diseases etc etc

I can see the latest information as 20 vat. But I guess when we collect her there be a itemised bill.
They charge 3%for card transactions so pound notes it has to be

Yep, standard VAT rate

Can't you get them to send you an email of the charges broken down?

They said on the phone you can appeal the charges.
As the invoice for the dog is 1,000 nz dollars I worked it out about £500.
Even if you pitch it at the usual UK cost of them it's still only £200 vat.
I'm confused. Com
