Default what solvent and sealant?

When removing the valve/rocker covers, Mr Haynes says

Quote:
Clean the mating surface of the cylinder head with solvent, removing all traces of old sealant
and then:

Quote:
Apply the sealant to the cut-outs in the cylinder head where the hasket half-cirlces fit
Apart from quoting the suzuki stuff (Suzuki Bond no. 1207B) they don't go into anymore detail on what the sealant and solvent is.

So:

What are the sealant and solvent as described above more commonly known as

Merci buckets

I was under the impression that they have a rubber seal, if thats the case, then i wouldnt use a sealent. However, i have never taken them off so dont know for sure.

I agree, I have taken them off and no sealant needed

The way that Haynes describe it, I think they want you to peel of the rubber gasket, clean off the old sealant, put fresh sealant on, and seat the gasket back into place. I guess from the replies that most people just leave the gasket in place when removing the cover and avoid resealing it.

It is a gasket, by definition it does not need sealing unless there is something wrong with it.

Pretty sure they have some sort of sealant on from the factory- I remember the drescents being pretty stuck. I just peeled the old muck off and reinstalled dry, worked just fine.
