doesn't help if a gear is missed and it revs beyond what its supposed to be limited to. I'd rather fix it so there's no potential damage

The other point is that the SV revcounter is optimistic - over-reading by over 10% at higher rpm, so that when the needle is showing 11,000, actual RPM is under 10,000. See this thread from SVRider: http://www.svrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=138676

Hmm interesting, if it's not an issue of the limiter not working properly there's the issue of slow revving once it hits it which I can't figure out. There's definitely a difference in rev speed in the videos I linked

If played at 0.25 speed, the rev limiter kicks in at 11k, then revs drop slightly, then it revs straight up to over 12k. That definitely can't be normal

Q, Do you regularly rev into the red?
A, Yes.-------------- Don't do it.
No.---------------Don't worry about it.

I take a slightly different view.
Are you likely to hit the limiter in normal use; very unlikely and possibly only if you seriously mess up a gear change.
Will you hit the limiter often if you try to resolve this perceived problem? Almost definitely.

Therefore you're more likely to damage the engine, or completely blow it, by trying to fix the problem than by ignoring it.

My head hurts if I shout really loudly so I'm booking myself in for brain surgery to find out why.

The rev limiter is intrinsic to the ECU not like an old type with a contact in the clocks so it's very very unlikely to be "set wrong"

The clock needle on the other hand isn't accurate.

Be right.

I dont intend to test it to the limiter many more times, but even so i don't think it'll damage the engine if i slowly bring it up to where the rev limit *should* be when it's tested, seeing as the rev limit is set well under what the engine can handle without damage (provided it has regular oil changes and maintenance).

It's just strange that it limits it where it should, then stops limiting it until much higher RPMs. Could it be a broken connection somewhere, or could the previous owner have done something to stop it working??

Unless you put an oscilloscope on the signal generator then you will never know.

IMO you're seeing needle overshoot on the clocks and worrying about nowt

its not just the needle because the whole engine revs slowly at the limiter, for some reason it can go to over 12k then drops down to like 10k and repeats. In the videos i linked originally, they sound completely different so it cant be just needle inaccuracy.

unfortunately don't have an oscilloscope

I do occasionally get the c42 error code when the ignition is turned to the on position, could that have anything to do with it? The fuel pump just doesnt prime properly when it comes up, and i turn the key or the kill switch on and off a few times to get it to prime
