Apparently not true so I wouldn't be concerned here. It can make claiming complicated though.

It can make one insurer want to pass you to claim with the other... and the other to pass you back... and on and on...

Some insurance companies (usually breakdown cover) have small print that state your policy is invalid if you also have the cover with someone else. If you get two companies who have that small print, then technically you have two invalid policies. My breakdown cover has this in their terms. I've had insurance policies with it in there too in the past.

yeah but if your cover is invalid because you have other cover, then you don't actually have cover, and therefore it's valid.

Basically one would always have to pay up but they'd fight that out between them and you'd be waiting for a long time. And you'd be paying twice for this privilege.

It's not illegal to be insured twice but it would be illegal to claim on more than one policy (different insurers) for the same incident. That is deemed fraud I believe. Also, you probably wouldn't get away with it. I used to check the MIB database for insurance when I was handling claims. I have had it come back to me showing 2 insurance policies for the same vehicle with overlapping date. Tat usually happened when the vehicle was sold and the seller forgot to cancel their policy. I had one case where the buyer was insured but crashed as he drove away after collecting his purchase.
