Default Newbie - Dilemma?!

Hi,
New owner of a 2002 Curvy, first bike after passing Mod2 last month.
Now, sorry for long post.
Did some very clever things:
1) Bought the first bike I saw. Saw it running, seemed great (21500 miles, hardly used over last 3 years according to MOT, new chain and sprocket, new brakes)
2) Bought a bike with no history.

Passed my test, bike wouldn't start.
Replaced battery.
Replaced Starter Solenoid and repaired Starter Motor.
New Battery turned out to be faulty, put old battery back in and it started.
Got the bike working for 4 days, bike broken down (symptoms, struggled to start, then rode about 2 miles, dials went crazy and cut out).
Took it to a Garage, diagnosed as faulty fuel tap flooding the cyclinders and the Alarm wiring was messed up.
Alarm removed and fuel tap repaired, oil + filter replaced- £286 later..
Rode 200ish miles over next few days, then same issue, struggled to start, rode about 500yards, dials went crazy and bike cut out.
Back to same garage, their diagnosis is fuel tap repair failed, and the Battery is causing the electrical problem so they've put new battery in and replaced fuel tap.

I'm picking the bike up today.
Now I'm not really trusting the bike, would you give it another chance or sell on?

Short Version:
1) Cheap bike turns out to be faulty.
2) Struggled to start/ Once riding the dials went crazy then cut out
3) Garage Removed alarm and repaired fuel tap as engine was flooding.
4) 200ish miles same issue, Garage replace battery and replace fuel tap
5) One more chance or sell on?

Thanks!
Matt

Sounds like the old reg rect is the problem here, a common problem, especially as the battery is giving you problems.

This is a very common problem with older SVs. The fuel tap thing sounds garbage and could be nothing more than it needing a carb balance causing a petrol smell that the garage latched onto and simply decided "that'll be it" without checking properly. The dials going mad is clearly not a fuel issue and points very obviously to electrics.

Do a search on here - lots of guides and posts about it.

Thanks for the comments so far.
The garage said they checked the whole charging system and it was fine.

They said the cyclinders were full of fuel, and the oil level was super high due to contamination too.
When I collect the bike later I will ask whether the rec/regt was definitely checked.

Just replace the RR anyway, it's cheap enough and a 5 minute job. Definitely sounds electrical to me.

Also, in all my years of having carb bikes, I've never known a set of unbalanced carbs to cause a fuel smell. It's usually a stuck float that causes it.

Picked the bike up yesterday. Only rode it for 10minutes so hard to tell.
They advised they put my new battery in, checked all the electrics again and didn't find any issues and cleaned all contacts up

They didn't replace the fuel tap but they found debris in the system so cleaned it all out again.
It used to pop/bang quite a bit (assumed due to the aftermarket exhaust) It didn't do it once on the ride home.

I think i'll give the bike one more chance and change the reg/rect as a precaution (I'll have a search for recommended replacements but if someone has a pointer that would be great)

Thanks for the help.

Look up Mosfett reg rect, be careful as some sv's have 2 plug connections, some have one.

How much did you pay for the bike?

If it were me I would pull apart all multi-connectors and remove corrosion from pins and sockets and spray with Switch cleaner(Servisol) and then treat with ACF50.

You could sell on the bike or better still use to to improve your knowledge of Motorcycle maintenance.

There are two basic types of Motorcyclist.

1:Those who really want to enjoy their Motorcycles and and learn that it's more than just a form of Transport.

2:Those who buy their way through life and don't want to get their hands dirty and Motorcycles are,"Disposable"

I have rebuilt engines from the crank up.I've ridden motorcycles where I've had the pistons in my hands that are firing me through the roads and not to be,"Hippy" about it there are a points of,"Zen" when the bike you ride has been fixed and worked on by,"You"
There's loads of good folks around to help if you do not want to do a number 2<BFG>

Bike was £880.
Well rode for 3 days fine. Bike has sat since Monday and battery was completely flat this morning.
Guess that definitely points to the reg/rec? Brand new battery was put in on Thursday.

My father-in-laws ER5 has sat in our garage for a month and started on the button.
