Default number plates legislation in France

In France, and in the EU I think, all the number plates must be identical: black letters on a yellow background, with the exception of the vehicles before 31.12.1992 are allowed to have a black background.

They must visible and fixed with rivets and show the country code

In France, the fine is of ‘class 4', which means that it can cost you up to 750EUR + The police will confiscate the plate and will immobilise your bike on the spot.

This happened to my sister's friend in the Bordeaux region last week-end. He had a small plate with italic black numbers and letters: 480EUR fine + his bike immobilised at a police station 180km from his home!
