why do they need two/three bikes bookending the runners? they don't have camera etc. surely all the exhaust is no good for the runners

I was thinking that. One on the left even got in the way once.
Maybe just there to advertise BMW, nothing to do with the race.

As an aside, the BBC coverage is really pants this year. I really don't need to see the front of the race for 2 hours, all the fun is further back
