Default Quick question for the org plumbers

Wtf are these things attached to the valve? And can they be ripped out?

Is it connected to out?
I would say it's a scale inhibitor but it would be wired round the pipe.

You in a rented flat?

Looks like a remote sensor badly placed. For use when the TRV sensing head cannot read room temperaure, for example when the radiator is behind furniture or curtains

Is your valve behind and in the middle of the rad?

Strange because they are on every radiator, and the radiators couldn't really be blocked

No just the normal adjustable ones on the side of the radiator

You cropped the photo short of the TRV but I'm guessing it's a Honeywell valve.

Probably like a T100F which has a remote sensor. Most TRVs have the sensor built in, but Honeywell thought it a good idea to make some with remote sensors so you sense where you want the temperature controlled ie body height etc. Who lies on the floor for comfort?

I didn't get a pic of the valve unfortunately. So would the valve have to be replaced with one that has a built-in sensor?

Maybe.
The important thing to to find the make and model if possible.
You can get replacement heads that then don't involve draining the system to change them.

There a re number o ft makes of remote sensor valves - I just have a pet hate of Honeywell. If you're lucky it could be a Drayton which should mean you can get a reasonable replacement from a merchants.

I'd guess the radiators previously had radiator covers, which need you to sense the temperature outside the cover.

It's a Danfoss. Don't think it says what model. It will be quite old though.
