Fuel Tank Range
Evening All, my curvy is now finally up and running -hurrah! And thanks to you all for your help and advice.
I replaced the fuel level sensor on it as the old one had fallen into pieces. I bought one off EBay which looked complete. My concern is whether it is working ok. I've filled the tank up, but would appreciate any advice on how many miles I should expect to do before the fuel light will come on? I don't want to assume there is sufficient fuel in the tank as the light hasn't come on! Regards Nick |

Re: Fuel Tank Range
I guess looking at fuelly most people get 50mpg+ and the tank is 17-18 litres. So probably a good 180 miles.

Re: Fuel Tank Range
On my 1999 Curvy and depending on how spirited my riding is and my body weight I think the lowest my reserve light started to flash was around 140 miles and if taking easy one time it hadn't come on when I put the bike away after 162 miles.
I don't bother with MPG tests any more and most of my riding is not in traffic.I'm am vigilant on keeping my Tyre pressures correct which is often overlooked for good MPG/Handling and Safety especially on two wheels. I already had a brass angled Tyre Valve extender but have bought these instead as my old Brass one is still a little difficult to use on the SV, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143274083714 HTH

Re: Fuel Tank Range
As R1ffR4ff states. My 99 curvy will usually get about 150 miles before the light starts to flash.

Re: Fuel Tank Range
You'll get as many different answers as there are curvy owners probably.
The light on mine doesn't start to flash until at least 185 miles usually, and I've seen just over 200 miles before refilling on several occasions. I brim the tank on mine when I fill up, by rocking the bike gently and dribbling the last couple of litres in. Even so, I've never managed to get any more than 15.5 litres into the tank when refilling. |

Re: Fuel Tank Range
Get a spare fuel can and strap it to the pillion, then ride until the light comes on and/ or it runs out of fuel.Put spare fuel in tank and ride to garage. This will tell you if the light works and how far you can get after it comes on. All useful to know.

Re: Fuel Tank Range
I get about 180 miles, and when the light comes on, it needs 3 gallons/13.5 litres to fill up. Best bet is fill it up, ride for say 100 miles, fil it again and work out your mpg. 60mpg gives 180 miles, and unless I'm caning it, it's pretty consistent to be honest.

Re: Fuel Tank Range
Which is why I was so surprised when I filled up the SV400 and got 190 miles to 11.12 litres of petrol. Or 77.7 mpg.
Now I know the SV400 has clearly a smaller engine. But if I travel similar speeds to an SV650 it should eat up the same petrol. As weight and aerodynamics won't really change all that much between the two models. So I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe I need to cane it a bit more. Or probably more likely the speedo is probably wildly optimistic. Not sure if this is the same as your curvey's but I noticed below 30mph the speedo heavily under reads. Then anything above 60mph looks to over ready by some way. Which is why I think I've got such good mpg. I think I'd be better off fitting a Bicycle speedometer as I feel that would be far more accurate. |

Re: Fuel Tank Range
Are you sure it isn't a kph speedo ?
Also, riffraff's tyre valve extenders: There's a helluva strain on valves if you consider weight & leverage & centrifungal force. Not nice having it leaving the wheel rim at speed !
