Default Legal age

Is there a legal age below which it is an offence to leave a child at home unsupervised? I was under the impression it was 14, but my missus reckons there is no legal age.

Discuss. Ta.

I thought it was 16, but hey I have no kids (that I know of).

A quick Google search came up with this...

Cheers Dave. I could have done that myself but I'm bored and couldn't be arsed.
At least I know now.

I THINK the Google search is right, I don't think there is a definitive age, common sense comes into it. All kids are different in their own way and some are more mature than others. Some kids have mental capacities lower than their age and some higher, it's the parents call.

I have been to jobs at work where teenagers have been on their own, neighbours have had concerns and we get to do a safe and welfare check. I always ensure that they are with an adult by the time I leave and that the parent/guardian has OK'd that person, so I suppose I would say 16 and over is an appropriate age, but thats just me.

Anyone work for Social Services can shed any light?

Yup Shelly's right. There's no actual age defined in the law. They prefer to leave it at when they are responsible enough. One 12 year can be much more or less responsible than another

It's up to adult individuals to decide when the child/children is responsible enough

There is an age where they can't look after other children though - think that is 14 i.e. they can be considered responsible enough to be home alone but not to supervise a younger child.

I think the parent would have to decide how sensible their child is rather than thinking along the lines of "Once they turn 16, we can leave them home alone". I know some proper feckwits who are 19 and if I were their parents I certainly wouldn't leave them alone in a house!!
