Default Darwin award attempt

Lifted from elsewhere...

Quote:
Lifted verbatim from the on-line edition of the Wall Street Journal:

Alive, but Slightly Rattled

An Oregon man survived a poorly conceived plan to impress his girlfriend by sticking a live 20-inch rattlesnake's head in his mouth, the Associated Press reports. Yes, alcohol was involved. "It got a hold of my tongue," said Matt Wilkinson a 23-year-old construction worker and snake collector from Portland. Mr. Wilkinson pulled the stunt after downing a six pack and a "mixture of stupid stuff" at a barbecue with friends where, at one point, he startled his girlfriend with the serpent. "I told her it was a nice snake. 'Nothing can happen. Watch,'" and with that he popped the snake's head in his mouth. Not too long afterward, his girlfriend was driving him to the hospital, as he struggled to breathe. His tongue eventually swelled to the point where it blocked his throat and he would have died had trauma doctors at the Oregon Health and Science University not cut a hole in his neck to insert a breathing tube. Mr. Wilkinson hasn't returned to work yet, but his co-workers were already asking what will likely be an oft-repeated question. What were you thinking? "It's my own stupidity," Mr. Wilkinson said. If you want to hear more from Mr. Wilkinson, the Portland Oregonian has a brief video of him explaining what happened.
