Unhappy Noisy engine.

Decided to go for a little ride this evening and ended up getting recovered home!

Short version....Doing 75ish on dual carriageway engine starts to hesitate similar to not running on both cylinders. As I slow and crawl to a halt at a set of lights engine is rattling like a b*tch...really, really loud then cuts out! Manage to restart it and get the bike to the side of the road and attempt to restart it again. After several attempts it gets running but either can't maintain the revs or cuts out! Also the oil pressure light was flickering. Temp light came on momentarily then off!

Noise seems to be top end rear but not sure!

Bike has oil. Its a little low but not drastically.

I am hoping its not something major. Could the noise be cam chain gone slack, or running dry caused by failed oil pump? Just ideas but hoping for a non-teminal solution!

Any ideas?

Cheers PJ

It always help to add the basic details (as in the sticky at the top of the section).

But just ball park, on provision it's where you say it is, when was the CCT's last check/reset ? it could be anything from the timing has slipped round and done in the valves (even punched the piston crown) to as you say a slack cam chain, either way it'll need to be stripped to have a look and shouldn't be run anymore until that has been done.

Cheers Mark.

Drop the oil out, if it's full of grey grinding paste then it's effed.

Course the oil light will be on when the engine isn't running.
How you going to get oil pressure when the oil pump isn't spinning around!

Can't offer anything myself, but listen to these guys ans put up a post in your regional section to see if any locals that are handy with spannering could come and look at it with you. Much better than just relying on the Haynes manual of lies

Yep I guessed there would be no oil pressure with engine off but I was of the belief that oil pressure light came on momentarily on ignition sequence then went out only staying on to indicate an oil pressure problem. I'm only going by haynes and experience with cars so am willing to be educated .

What happens normally is the oil pressure light comes on when you turn it on. Then when you start the engine and oil pressure is developed, the oil light goes out.

If you have not started engine, oil light will not go out.

There is no sequence in particular, not that fancy, just a wire from engine which turns a light on if there is no pressure. Simply a switch and a bulb.
