Default HPI check - any online recommendations?

Looking to get one done, never done one before.

Wheres the best, most detailed and most cost effective place you used recently?

Or are they all the same?

Cheap HPI Check from moneysavingexpert.com

Best value HPI checks.

Originally conceived so you can check whether the car you're buying has outstanding finance on it (i.e. the previous owner still owes money for the car), HPI checks now offer all manner of other info, and come at different price levels. Outside of occasional special offers, the following generally offer the best value.
  • MyCarCheck. The cheapest, but lacks crucial checks.

The cheapest outside of text-messaging based services, for £3.95 MyCarCheck offers many of the checks common to more expensive providers, but crucially does not look for outstanding finance, although its site makes it appear like it does. Still, if you're buying directly from a dealer and just want a quick check, it might be worth a go.
  • RAC. Most comprehensive for the cash.

The RAC owns market-leader HPI, and uses its system for checks. Yet it charges £9.99 as opposed to HPI's £19.99 for the exact same check, the only difference being that HPI offers a bigger guarantee against giving you the wrong info. Given the notorious difficulty of claiming on these guarantees, the cheaper option's a much better proposition.
  • Experian AutoCheck. Best for multiple car checks.

While Experian's happy to charge £19.99 for a single Autocheck, for £24.99 it'll let you vet up to 5, making the average cost much more reasonable. Again its checks are noted for accuracy. The autotrader site offers its own re-badged version of this service for the same cost.

You'd be bothered if it turned up stolen and got taken away from you with no comeback!

Never even heard of text based ones though....

Thanks to the tshirt man also, v. comprehensive. RAC it is. Small price for a bit of peace of mind.

No better than a con trick. After you've paid, the link to 'Finance Protection' turns out to be a pdf of a receipt you get the seller to sign!

Seems you get what you pay for.

Depends what you're going for, the "mycarcheck" thing is alright for a quick "is it nicked or badly written off" check.

having bought a cloned car and loosing £ 10,000 i would have a hpi check, that text thing just checks a number plate to a car but cant check the paper work. you need the number in the top right circle on the log book to check against the number plate and the chassis number and all three must tally if they dont something is wrong. i got my money back after 3 years when the thieves were caught but i think i was fortunate
