Edit: I should explain that the state of California and it's residents are not thought highly of in most other parts of the US.
Example: This year California will soon be facing a devastating water shortage. If this were any other state the public would be rallying to help the people there. When it's mentioned however, even by National news agencys, the concern is the rising prices of produce grown there for the rest of the US.
We have similar issues here, I won't go into detail for fear of offending the people from that area, although we've not got that many active Orgers from that part of the UK.

My Uncle's not a native Californian, he was born here, so perhaps not as bad as you're average resident? Although I understand where you're coming from Bill

I of course meant no offense to your relatives it's just a generalization of the people there.

Was a warm afternoon, the sun was shining so went for a little 100 mile spin on the bike.

The roads were deserted. I have no idea where everyone was.
Went nearly 30 miles (and through 2 small villages) without seeing another person or car on the road.
It was like a movie where everyone else had vanished. Very strange for such a beautiful day.
However as always, that seems to bring out the bad in me and so was a ton up ride, me making full use of the the few long straights along the way.

Stopped at a biker pub for a bite to eat.
Nice crowd there, 70's rock playing loud, some pretty girls, good food.
Almost hated to leave but an enjoyable ride back with only a few cars seen.

Great afternoon on the bike, could have only been better if I'd made the whole day of it.

Had a NHS "MoT" this morning but what made me smile was the trainee nurse having to put up with the regular nurse who was meant to be observing. After the third interruption to re-explain something I had already understood we got to the blood sample bit and I was suggesting "left a bit, right a bit" to her as the needle headed towards the vein and she twigged I was taking the pee out of her mentor. She was half giggling and missed the vein, which annoyed the regular nurse so I distracted her with a question about the follow up appointment when attempt #2 was going in on the other arm so the new girl could just get on with it. I then made them both laugh by suggesting the 15mm round plasters I now had on both arms were far too large and were they wasting my taxes?

In two weeks time I'll probably be posting on the Gripe thread about the regular nurse getting her own back when I go back for the results consultation. My money is on a lecture about being overweight but then the nurse isn't exactly Kate Moss herself so that might be entertaining on it's own.

Oh I don't know, this might be like taking my huge cats to the vet for their booster. The very skinny Spanish vet is lovely but says that my boys need to lose a few pounds. The normal weight Spanish male vet says they are fine as long as they don't get any bigger and take some exercise. The chubby English lady vet who is the shape of a Weeble says they are not fat, they are cuddly, just like her!

There is no way you'd call my practice nurse cuddly - scary maybe...

Another related smile are the cracking bruises I now have on the inside of my elbows. I got some excellent sympathy from Lady Poppy without the usual need to exaggerate
