Any idea what the black and white wire is underneath the carbs?

possibly the earth/ground/return path to battery (we argue a lot about the nomenclature) for the carb heater.

I think Seeker is correct, the black/white wires are negative returns - no earths on a motorbike of course

You've just made me waste 10 minutes looking for a photo of a motorcycle with an anti-static earthing strap. I couldn't find one - I guess you don't get car-sick on a motorbike!
