Default Non Starter

Hi, I've just bought an 01 naked SV and it doesn't start.

The dash lights come on with and the battery is fully charged but there nothing when hitting the starter button. The kill switch is in the right position and its in neutral.

The fuel light is on though (it does have some fuel in it), does that make a difference? Surely it should at least turn over even if its low on fuel?

Am I missing something about how these bikes work or is there a likely fault?

Thanks

Side-stand switch?

The bikes are not supposed to be able to start with the side-stand down.

Thanks for the replies.

What is the clutch switch and what does it do? Don't think I've tried it with the clutch in as it was in neutral so will try that.

Does the stand have to be up to start even if its in neutral?

Unless the switch has been bypassed you have to hold the clutch lever in to start an SV (and almost all bikes these days). The sidestand can be down but if you engage a gear and the stand is still down the bike will cut out.

Both switches can go faulty if the contacts get very dirty and so prevent the bike from spinning over. Start with the clutch and go from there.

I'm pretty sure they do - you just can't put it into gear with the side-stand down.

You do need the clutch held in, even in neutral, though.

Cool thanks for that.
I've not known that before where you have to have the clutch in, that's different to my other bikes. They've all cut out if you put it in gear with the stand down but have all started in neutral without the clutch and the stand down.

I was hoping it was something I was missing and not more faults with bikes!

I got the SV as an "everyday" bike to replace my aging GS500, I've got an 06 ninja to so wanted something to give me the best of both worlds - comfy and sporty. Looking forward to getting out on it!

Any tips or cool mods you could recommend? Definitely looking at a screen as I'll be doing some miles on it.

Thanks

I'm in a similar situation as you.I'm a new SV650,"Curvy" owner(2nd hand machine).

I've just fitted a,"Puig" windshield.I've had these on my old CX500s for around 10 years. For there size there's nothing to beat them IMHO.They keep the wind off the torso and most of the head and by dipping the head slightly the airflow goes right over the rider. They also,by their design, push air out to the sides of the bars.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Puig-Winds...EAAOSwU~FWDn0~

£34.99.

Very easy to fit and they have an extra hole in the bracket so I drilled for a couple of self-tappers to secure the screen through the Headlight bracket taking care not to drill too far.I used a bit of thick tape on the headlight so the drill wouldn't mark as I took care when it came through.

Bonus:

When coming back from mid-week evening bike meets into the dusk and dark the lights from the clocks reflects up on the dark tint and you feel like you are on a Two wheeled,"Fighter Aircraft" with a H.U.D(Heads Up Display"Totally cool feeling

Note: Due to age and industrial injuries I have to make my Motorcycles suit my needs. In my youth I would have road the,"Curvy" fully nekked

Thanks for that, that's really useful.
I'd been looking at those screens as they look good so will probably get one soon.

I don't think its age mate, IMO it makes sense to have a screen if you do some miles regularly. Would like to add a few touches to style wise to make it "my" bike.

I've also just fitted some Hand-guards,
£9.99<grin>

Right side goes on as if were made for the bike, left side had to fettle the adjuster bracket that they use as it just a tad too wide to get the nut on from the Clutch lever.

They came with their own plastic bar-ends that work,

But I wanted to keep the heavy metal ones that came with the bike but used the new Allen bolts that came with the new guards as they were better than what was on the bike,

I'm waiting on some cheap,"Gel" grips as I do everything I can to defeat vibration because I suffer from VWF(Vibration White Finger) raynaud's disease.

They should fit,
