The design of sockets and extensions allows sockets to either work at an angle (the square drive is ball ended) or can be pushed in fully and locks socket in a straight line with extension. Also extension or socket is locked on by a ball detent until button in centre of socket wrench is pressed to release it, handy for stopping sockets and extensions dropping off and disappearing into inaccessible places.
