Coolant level.
When changing the coolant, do I check the level when the bike is on the side stand or when upright?
Thanks. |

Re: Coolant level.
Check the coolant reservoir with the bike upright and level ( just like checking oil level ). With the bike on sidestand the level will be about 10mm higher, as long as it is between H and L marks it is OK.

You have to be careful not to let the engine get too hot as the coolant will expand and overflow. Once satisfied the cooling system has been, "Burped" you can put the Rad cap on but after a while you should check and top up the level. The instructions are in the WSM. The level in the, "Catchment" bottle is not a measure of the level in the radiator. Motorcycles like these use an open-atmospheric emergency overflow system not a sealed pressurized expansion system. This is a good read, https://itstillruns.com/coolant-over...-12218289.html There's several videos on YT to help and this is a decent one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt2eYZMlTFI

Re: Coolant level.
Any air in the system should rise to the radiator cap which then opens as the coolant expands on heating so expelling the air to the reservoir. Later as the engine cools coolant is drawn back from the reservoir to ensure the system is maintained completely full...
