And as one of the tree hugging hippies of the forum i also think the entire concept is brilliant and would like to live in a world where this becoming a reality was just round the corner.

I'm just waiting for Fizz or Ed or any of our other resident cyclists to spot this. I think its as cool as a glacier and i'd have a lot more respect fr the lycra clad muppets that jump lights if they did it on these things.

I would love to see a car free city, however I do worry about the eco tag when put next to a cycle that looks like it has batteries in it.

A standard bike is pretty clean in its construction, however when you start looking at use of exotic materials that require more dirty extraction processes, then the ecological impact goes up.

Producing batteries uses rare and often toxic materials that have a significantly increased ecological impact. Old batteries such as Ni-Cad and Li-Ion need extra special care when disposed of to ensure that toxic substances do not get into the environment or rare materials are recycled.

Think I will stick to my old and efficient Mountain Bike.

Great looking concept though.

As for that, well it looks good, it also looks quite clever. I wander how heavy it will be though and what the cost would be, ( apologies if its in the article you linked to I only skim read it )

Carless london, it'll never happen, people are to dependent on their cars. Also cycling is neither cool or trendy, juding by the articles the web I read most people seem to hate both cycling and cyclists. Or thats what the media would have us believe.

We could have carless cities now, whats wrong with a standard push bike ? You can already by an electric bike from Halfrauds should you wish to.

Personally Spidey, I'd not buy one dont see the point in it. But for fat lazy commuters well why not

You need to read the full article to understand the reason for the batteries and how it benefits the city.

but basically, all the bikes are parked securely at bus stops...or you can pedal like mad and then take it on the bus with you. The bus then runs off the charge stored in the bikes and you get a discount on your bus fare since some of your hard work made the bus go in the first place.

The guy won an award for the concepts so i'm sure he explains it far better in the linked article than i just did above.
