Not done it myself yet but I'm gonna do Normandy next year for a long weekend as I'm into all the war stuff, seems a popular place for a weekend you might wanna consider.

Btw, we got a return ferry for £40, the Chunnel was £70. Or, you could do longer ferry to Cain that puts you in the middle of everything and saves you having to ride through Calais. |

Re: long weekend to france - ideas please.
I went to Normandy in 2007, to do a week touring all the second world war sites. It is a huge drive from Calais. It is much better to get the ferry to Caen, which is right at the start of the landing beaches. I hired a holiday home, static caravan thing while I was there, and stayed right bang opposite the Canadian Landing beach. Be aware there is loads and loads and loads to see, so if you go for a long weekend with the view to actually seeing the sights you will hardly scratch the surface.
One tip is to go around 6th June on the anniversary of the landings, as it when all the veterens are they to talk to. Also all the nutter enthusiasts are driving about in tanks and personnel carriers in full uniform. I had a brilliant time, but that is because the history of war, is something I am interested in. I intend to go and do all the World War 1 sites at a later date. I did get talking to some bikers at a sevice station who were heading to Normandy, and they had got the Ferry over at 03:00am. It was 08:00am in the morning and they had beendoing Motorway slog in pouring rain since getting to Calias. They were totally demolarised. |
